  The Department of English stands as the largest and one of the most distinguished departments within the Faculty of Arts at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Nanded. With six full-time sanctioned posts, it has earned a reputation for academic rigor, rich legacy, and impactful alumni. Since its inception in June 1963, the Department has played a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual and cultural fabric of the college.
  The Department was founded and nurtured under the visionary leadership of Shri N.C. Varadacharyulu, who served as its Head until 1977, when he assumed the position of the second Principal of the college. The mantle of leadership then passed to Dr. I. Venkateshwarlu, followed by successive Heads including Shri M. U. Deshmukh, Dr. V.D. Chandanshive, Smt. Vidya Gahilot, and Dr. Ajay R. Tengse. Since December 2021, the Department has been ably led by Dr. L. V. Padmarani Rao, under whose stewardship the Department continues to flourish in both academic and research spheres. The recent addition of dynamic faculty members Dr. Kailash M. Ingole, Mr. Madhav S. Dudhate, and Dr. Ratnamala U. Mhaske in July 2023 has further enriched the Department's academic environment.
  The Department is home to the English Literary Association (ELA), which actively organizes a range of co-curricular and extra-curricular programs to foster creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills among students. In pursuit of its commitment to professional and academic development, the Department has successfully hosted a wide array of webinars, workshops, and national and international conferences, benefiting scholars and educators from across the region and beyond.

Features of the Department: The Department of English has consistently upheld its commitment to academic excellence, providing quality education to a diverse student body drawn from across the region. As a leading department within the Faculty of Arts, it has grown both in stature and scope over the decades, combining traditional academic strengths with modern pedagogical tools and infrastructure
Infrastructure and Learning Resources:The Department is equipped with cutting-edge facilities that support dynamic and effective teaching-learning experiences. These include:
• A Language Laboratory featuring 20+1 consoles networked via LAN, integrated with ORELL, Lexis, and Linguaphone software.
• An e-Learning Centre with in-house recording capabilities.
• A Smart Classroom with LCD projector and Smart Board for interactive instruction.
• A dedicated collection of audio-visual resources including CDs, cassettes, and books from EFLU, Hyderabad, aimed at enhancing students’ phonetic and listening skills.
• The Department also features a Sense Board (Intelligent Board) to enhance ICT-enabled teaching, promote interactive learning, and cultivate greater student interest in English language and literature.
• A well-maintained Departmental Library, supplemented by high-quality books in the Central Library, many of which are generously donated by distinguished alumni.
Academic Programs
The Department offers a full range of academic programs:
• Undergraduate Program: B.A. in English (Three years)
• Postgraduate Program: M.A. in English (Two years)
• Research Program: Ph.D. in English
• Career-Oriented Course: Communicative English and Soft Skills
• Value-Added Course: Life Skills
• Add-on Course: Translation Studies
Additionally, two Bridge Courses—one in English Literature and another in English Language—are offered to first-year undergraduate students to facilitate academic transition. The Department is a recognized Research Centre of SRTM University, Nanded, having guided 20 scholars to their M.Phil. (YCMOU, Nashik) and another 22 to their Ph.D. degrees (SRTMU, Nanded). Presently, twelve scholars are actively pursuing their doctoral research under the Department’s guidance.
Co-curricular and Enrichment Activities
The English Literary Association (ELA) serves as an active platform for students to explore and express their literary and creative talents. Regularly conducted activities include:
• Poetry and Story Readings
• Dramatics and Prepared Speeches
• Elocution and Debates
• Grammar Games and Literary Quizzes
• Spell Bee Competitions and Poster Presentations
• Wall Paper Displays on Literary Themes
To chronicle its vibrant academic culture, the Department publishes an Annual Newsletter that encapsulates its yearly achievements. It also maintains several boards such as Thought of the Day, Poetic Thought, and Literary Terms, which are updated daily by postgraduate students. Special programs organized by the Department include:
• A One-Week Soft Skills Program and a One-Week Know Yourself Program, conducted annually for students and faculty.
• Literary Film Screenings for enhanced understanding of curricular texts.
• The GIFT-IV-ISM initiative (launched in 2018–19), a unique effort to support economically disadvantaged students.

• Two-Day National Workshop on Drama and Theatre Acting (8–9 April 2022), in collaboration with other language departments of the college.
